How to Fix Ripped Jeans Without Sewing

Happy Friday, lovelies!  I hope you've all had a fabulous week and are ready for the weekend.  We're supposed to get upwards of a foot of snow tomorrow in Denver, so I'm planning on doing some early spring cleaning, and maybe some crafting too.  Now this is a great project to tackle this weekend; best thing is, it only takes a few minutes yet saves you hundreds of dollars a year.  No joke.  I'm talking about the holes in your kids (or yours!) jeans.  I spend $15-20 a pair, times 5 pairs each kid, and within a month or two I've got to throw them out.  Such a waste of money, especially as a single mom with two kids!  One day it occurred to me I'd only need to sacrifice the outgrown pairs I'd ordinarily throw away and could save the rest of the jeans.  Did I mention with no sewing?!  In the year I've been doing this, I no longer have to replace worn out jeans; I only buy new ones when they've outgrown their old! {How to after the jump}

You'll need:

  • Jeans with holes in the knees
  • Scissors
  • Aleene's Fabric Fusion (my fave fabric glue for heavier weight fabrics)
  • Outgrown pair of jeans

Turn the jeans inside out.  (You can see the middle pair had a previous patch job!)

Trim the stringy excess from the holes (if desired).

Ready to patch things up?

Cut a piece of scrap denim slightly larger than your hole.  Apply the fabric glue to the perimeter of the hole, rubbing it in good with the tip of the bottle.

Put your patch on top and press firmly.

Repeat for the other pairs, and let dry overnight.

Make sure the glue has completely dried!  Using a small pair of scissors, trim the excess fabric that isn't adhered down.

And here's what they'll look like now.  Flip them right side out now...

Et voila!  "New" jeans!

Here's the before and after.  Personally, I like the after ones better!  Do your kids go through jeans like mine?  How do you deal with it?

  2. How many wears and washes does this method extend the life of the jeans? I know when I use iron on's I only get about 2 or 3 more wears and washes out of it. I am hoping this works better. Has anyone tried this, what was your experience?
