DIY ~ Old Sweater to New Sweater Refashion

Happy Friday Eve!!!  It's Thursday, which means it's time for the last installment of Kim and Natasha's Old to New in October.  It's bittersweet, this has been so much fun and it's really forced me to revamp some old yucky things into some new, really rad ones!

Today's refashion is this cowl/turtleneck sweater.  I mean, idk what to call it.  Look at this bad boy...

Right?  No wonder I never wore it.  I had no idea how to!  So I decided to make it work.  I turned it inside out, and cut the neck out, just below the seam.

Then I grabbed a needle and some transparent nylon thread and hemmed the new neckline of the sweater using a wide running stitch.  Literally, 5 minutes later I had this:

Wayyy cute now, right??  I may snip the bottom and hem it too, I'm not quite sure yet though.  Now, what did I do with that hideous neck?  Ahh, behold my snood!

It's so perfect and warm, and PERFECT for the insane CO weather, it was 17 degrees out this morning, so this came in handy!  This is such a great way to revamp an old piece that I would have just donated, but now I have 2 cute and wearable pieces!

DIY ~ Refashioned Rose Gold Glitter Shoes

Hello lovelies!  It's Thursday, which means it's time for me to link up to Natasha and Kim's Old to New in October!  Today's inspiration comes from the Sam Edelman Adena Rose Gold Flat.  I love these shoes and still covet them, but I'm on a shopping break, so it's a no go for me right now.

After seeing Grace's Rose Gold Miniaudiere DIY, I knew what I had to do.  I gathered my supplies and followed her perfect instructions. 

I stuffed the shoes with newspaper so they would kind of hold shape and also so I wouldn't mess up the insides too much.  Also, in hindsight, I should have added alot more glitter to my mod podge, since I ended up doing like 8 coats!

Here it is after one coat. Let each coat dry thoroughly before applying the next!

And here's what they look like now!  I thought they were done, until I took the picture and the flash revealed some still visible zebra stripes.  Ughhh.  Another coat tonight and hopefully that should do it!

I cannot wait to wear these with some ankle length trousers!

Old to New in October: DIY Refashioned Thrifted Suede Skirt

Hello lovelies!  I'm once again liking up with the amazing Kim from A Little Bit of This and Natasha from Required 2 Be Inspired for their Old to New in October series!

How many of you have seen a ginormous leather/suede maxi skirt in the thrift shops?  So hideous, right?  But where else can you buy a leather skirt with potential for less than $10?  Of course I bought it, and it's been sitting in my 'To Do' drawer for some time.  If I realized it was going to be this easy, I would have refashioned it months ago!  If you look closely, there's a seam in the middle, and it just so happens to be at the exact location I want the skirt's hem to be.

As you can see, the quality is amazing, it's fully lined too!  And the leather is sooooo soft!

So I used my trusty seam ripper and after about 5 minutes (if that)...

I had this!  I cut the lining about half an inch shorter than the leather and then was ready to hem.

I've heard that using the correct type of glue works better on leather than stitching, so I gave it a go.  I made sure to use the type that specified it could be dry cleaned.  This step was so easy, because the leather was already folded, so I just used that existing hem and glued it down, letting it dry for 24 hours.

Then I needed to hem the lining.  Well, I didn't feel like getting out the sewing machine so I just used the same glue and folded up about an inch of fabric over it, creating the hem.  I let this dry overnight, and voila!

My new leather skirt!  I took these pics real quick before work this morning.

Now I have extra leather to make something with... hmmmm ....

DIY ~ Refashioned Pretty & Punk Shoes

Hello lovelies!  I was so thrilled to get so many fabulous DIY suggestions last week (post here), and both Megan of The Frugalista Diaries and Alicia from Fashion by Alicia suggested I do something to an old pair of shoes.  Well I had just the shoes, and just the supplies!  It fits in perfectly with the challenge Natasha from Required 2 Be Inspired and Kimberly from A Little Bit of This are hosting for the month of October: Old to New in October.  As Natasha explains, "The idea behind Old to New in October is to take something old from your closet and refashion it to something new and fabulous!"  Is that a killer idea and just right up my alley or what?!  So let's get started on this easy and fabulous DIY!

Materials:

• Old shoes that you are ready to part with
• Lace ribbon (this is vintage, I got it at the thrift store)
• Liquid Stitch
• Studs (these are from a contest I won from M&J Trimming)
• Scissors

Use the lace ribbon and wrap it around the shoe, folding/overlapping where needed (where the shoe curves) and cut the lace.

Figure out how you want the studs on the lace, and use jewelry pliers to bend the prongs around the lace.

Now you have your studded lace trim!  Time to apply it!

Apply about 2 inches of liquid stitch to your shoe and then put your studded lace over the glue, pressing firmly (your fingers will get messy, so get over it).  When the shoe begins to turn, you will need to snip a notch in the lace at the top and fold it over itself so that the trim still lines up nicely at the top.

Side is done :)  I let it dry for a little while before I moved to another part of the shoe so the lace didn't move.  You could also use some clips to hold the lace to the shoe instead of waiting.  Hindsight :)
Finish the shoe, and then repeat the whole fabulous process for the other shoe.  Let dry for 24 hours.

Finished product!  I'm kinda loving them.  They are an absolutely unique pair of shoes, and best of all, cost nothing!
